With around thirty thousand entries, the 10th-century Suda, a.k.a. Souda, an encyclopedic lexicon of the ancient Mediterranean world, contains numerous biographical notices. Many are drawn from ancient sources that have since been lost. It has an almost contemporaneous Islamic parallel, the Kitab al-Fehrest of Ibn al-Nadim.
Little is known about the author, who probably lived in the second half of the 10th century.
