Portuguese naval officer António de Abreu (c. 1480 – c. 1514) participated in the conquest of Hormuz (1507) and Malacca, where he received severe facial wounds (1511). His three-ship exploratory voyage to the Spice Islands in 1512 enabled the Portuguese to map the sea route to the islands and control the supply of spices at their source.
