Marva Wright

Marva Wright

Down in Louisiana, Marva Wright was called the Blues Queen. Fans of her energy-filled performances, both live and recorded, called her a lot of other things, too, like "Marvalous Marva." The "bluesiana" numbers she favored were a strong showcase for her dynamic, gospel-rooted voice. (AllMusic)

Marva Wright is an ultra-cheery, gospel-belter-turned-bluestress who was born and raised in New Orleans. Along with jazz trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, she more or less has the city eating out of her hands, and the nourishment is in the form of her canyon-sized voice. (Rick Koster. Louisiana Music, p. 154) On that basis, Outstanding. File under: New Orleans Voices.
