The Band

Maybe, if we'd known the background, Music from Big Pink mightn't have come as such a surprise. The Band confirmed the rating, and while things slowly fell away after that, the first four studio albums marked a major milestone on the road to Americana. 

...their schooling in the Southern roadhouses with Ronnie Hawkins followed by their work as Dylan's backing group meant they were at once both source and emulators. (Joe Boyd, White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s p. 226)
