The Misunderstood

The Misunderstood

California outfit who started playing basic R&B-derived rock a la the Stones and the Animals, added pedal steel guitarist Glenn Campbell, and headed for outer space. Expatriate British radio announcer John Ravenscroft (who subsequently morphed into John Peel) was a big fan, and encouraged them to move to England in 1966.

While they were endorsed by Peel,  praised by the British music press and the likes of Pink Floyd and the Move, difficulties with the U.S. draft authorities and internal problems saw the original outfit disband in 1967. Campbell put together another luneup, and later moved on to heavy rock outfit Juicy Lucy. Interesting. File under: California Psychedelic
