Palmerston

Cape, A point of Land, which forms the North-West Entrance into Broad Sound … this Cape I have named Cape Palmerston"  (James Cook 1 June 1770) Henry Viscount Palmerston was a Lord of the Admiralty, 1766 to 1778.

Peak Downs

Electorate created by the 1977 redistribution from the former seat of Belyando. Abolished in 1991 and divided among new seats (Charters Towers and Fitzroy) and the existing electorate of Gregory.

Peak Island 

Located near Cape Manifold and identified by Cook on 28 May 1770 as high and round.

Pier 

Head, identified by Cook as the North-West point of Thirsty Sound.

Plains of Promise 

or Province of Albert after Prince Albert, the Queen's Consort, flat savannah grasslands named by Captain John Lort Stokes in 1841. Climatic and other factors meant that promise remained largely unfulfilled. 

Portsmith

Suburb of Cairns named after William (Bill) Smith, pioneer and promoter of a track from Cairns to the Tablelands that contains the city'd port facilities, separated from Bungalow in 1973. Enlargement of the Smiths Creek wharf facilities began with a bulk sugar terminal in 1964, with storage sheds facing Smiths Landing, and the loading wharf in Trinity Inlet. The area also includes wharves for seafood industries, freezer facilities and the Water Police.
