15 Visit to Mackay by Queen Elizabeth II. Transferred from Lindeman Island and stayed for only a few hours.

9 Special lease over the whole of Brampton Island was transferred into the names of Arthur and his wife Jess.

October

13 At about 5:30 in the afternoon an outburst of "black damp" (carbon dioxide) spread through the No. 1 State Mine in Collinsville. There were a total of 40 miners underground at the time, and while there were immediate attempts to rescue the men, inadequate rescue equipment and lack of communications under the ground saw seven men and two pit ponies die. The miners were buried the following day, with 2000 people attending the funeral.
