1864

Membership of Queensland Parliament increased from 26 to 32. New elrctorates, each returning a single member, were Clermont, Kennedy, Maryborough, Mitchell, Rockhampton and Warrego. The first Member for Kennedy was George Elphinstone Dalrymple.

George Dalrymple's expedition passed through the Ingham area.

Township of Wickham, was established on Rita Island, a few kilometres from the mouth of the Burdekin, but was swept away by flooding. 

A police camp established on the Burdekin, 40 km north of the (future) site of Charters Towers.

New settlement established at Townsville.

Settlement of Somerset on a small inlet on the eastern side of the tip of Cape York was proclaimed as a port and refuge for victims of shipwrecks.

Frank Jardine, with his younger brother Alexander Jardine, travelled from Rockhampton to Somerset at the tip of Cape York Peninsula where his father John was setting up a cattle station. Starting with 42 horses and 250 head of cattle the pair arrived ten months later, having dealt with constant harassment along the way as they forced their way through scrub and swamps and crossed at least six large rivers. They reached Somerset on 2 March 1865 with 12 horses and 50 cattle. Jardine claimed to have personally killed 47 Aboriginal people, and the expedition as a whole produced a death toll in excess of 200.

Coal deposit at Blair Athol discovered, though there was no mining until much later. 

Charles Buzacott begins publication of the Peak Downs Telegram and Queensland Mining Record at Clermont.

Sheep grazing began in the Cloncurry-Hughenden region.

Copper discoveries at Einasleigh.

George Dalrymple's expedition identified the mouth of the Herbert, opening on to Hinchinbrook Channel.

25 Clermoont town reserve proclaimed.

August

Passing of the Sugar and Coffee Regulations Act by the Queensland Parliament gives impetus to the development of the sugar industry.

4 First Mackay Court of Petty Sessions held.
