March

20 Cyclone Larry's eye crossed the coast of Queensland at Innisfail as  a Category 4 system. Larry seriously damaged much of Innisfail and destroyed many of the surrounding banana plantations. Innisfail's art deco structure, including the magnificent Johnstone Shire Halls, mostly built in double brick, resisted the cyclone fairly well. Pre World War I structures suffered substantial roof damage and consequently internal rain damage, owing to torrential rains for some weeks after the cyclone first struck. Around 160 staff members and 280 guests from Dunk Island had been evacuated to Cairns and the resort suffered structural and water damage.

July

1 Dunk Island resort reopened after an estimated $20 million refurbishment and rebuild.
