Johann Flierl Lutheran Missionary, founder of Hope Valley Mission in January of 1886. He was on his way to establish a mission in New Guinea but was held up in Cooktown and began work amongst the Guugu Yimithirr. He established himself on the Cape Bedford Aboriginal Reserve. Captain Matthew Flinders completed the first circumnavigation of Australia, setting sail from Sydney on 22 July 1802, heading north and surveying the coast of Queensland, passing through Torres Strait, and explored the Gulf of Carpentaria en route. Returning to England as a passenger aboard HMS Porpoise Flinders navigated the ship's cutter back to Sydney after the ship was wrecked on Wreck Reefs, north-east of Gladstone, approximately 1127 km north of Sydney.
