Private railway (officially, a tramway because it was authorised by the Tramways Act) jointly financed by Ayr, Thuringowa and Townsville divisional boards opens for business, running 44 miles from Stewart’s creek, or Ayr Junction. It took 10 months to lay the track.

Population of the Burdkekin district was about 1500 and the town of Ayr 338.
