Gordon & Kathleen Stynes bought  Dunk Island, relocated their family from Victoria and set about redeveloping and upgrading the resort’s facilities. The Stynes Family owned and operated the island and resort until 1964.

Construction work began on Farleigh mill's own rail line to the north coast areas, due to the need deliver increased throughput and reduce the expense of using the government-owned rail line. The line was completed in 1961.

Holy Spirit College opens on the border between Glenella and Mt Pleasant.

Hayman Island State primary school opened.

March 

31 The Marian railway bridge is washed away by raging floodwaters causing immense disruption to Pioneer Valley residents.

December 

1 At the expiration of the previous lease, a new special lease in the name of Arthur and Jess Busuttin was issued for 20 years, again over the whole of the island but excluding a coastal esplanade.
