Atherton school opens.

Cairns-Kuranda railway line completed.

Normanton-Croydon railway completed. 

Farleigh mill tramline was extended with the purchase of old rails from the River Estate tramway.  Also in April of that year Bolton imported machinery from Mirrlees Tait and Watson and began making cube sugar.

Croydon to Normanton railway completed.

Golden Gate post office opened.

The Gulf country was severely flooded with Edward Palmer from Canobie trapped in Normanton and unable to return to the property. Surrounding properties recorded water levels as rising over 4 metres, causing widespread destruction and the loss of hundreds of stock.

Presbyterian Church opens in Herberton.

Valuable stands of cedar were found at Cedar Creek (Ravenshoe).

The first Italian migrants arrived in Ingham to begin working on the local cane fields.

The first ballast train reached Kuranda

May

13 Rail was laid to the end of Section Two of the Kuranda railway at Myola. 

June 

15 Mr Johnstone, one of three Railway Commissioners at that time opened the Kuranda railway line for goods traffic only. 

25 The Cairns- Kuranda Railway line was opened to passenger travel.

December

9 McKinlay Shire created out of parts of Boulia and Cloncurry under the Divisional Boards Act 1887.
