Robert Smith elected Member for Bowen. Conservative 1888–1890 Ministerial 1890–1902

Ayr Divisional Board inaugurated, extending from Baratta Creek in the north to Wangaratta Creek with Charles Young as Chairman. Later became a Shire Council in 1903.

The Cutten family acquired several homestead selections north of Mission Beach, establishing an estate they named Bicton. They grew tropical fruit, tea and coffee and operated a timber mill at Bingil Bay.

School was opened in Brandon.

Queen’s Hotel opened on Queen Street Ayr.

Chinese miners removed from Clermont after racial riots. 

Work on the Normanton-Croydon railway commenced.

Farleigh manager, F.W. Bolton  began to install tramways since the size of the estate made improved transportationimperative.

Herberton Mining, Pastoral and Agricultural Association held its first annual show.

Herberton borough was formed and included in the Tinaroo local government division.

Vulcan mine discovered at Irvinebank. 

Kuranda township was surveyed.

Lake Eacham, along with a narrow band of shoreline rainforest were proclaimed a scenic reserve.

First Gaol in Mackay opened in North Mackay in area opposite present Kooyong Hotel east of Harbour Road.

Iron bridge over the Pioneer River at Sydney Street was opened.

1 North Eton Sugar Mill officially opened by Premier Samuel Griffith, the first government financed Central Mill in Queensland.

April 

20 A meeting of predominantly Irish workers at Kamerunga resulted in the formation of the Victorian Labour Leagueby workers on the Cairns-Kuranda railway line.
