Australia's first cane toads (Bufo marinus) were released at Gordonvale in an attempt to control the native Frenchi beetle (Lepidiota frenchi) and the greyback beetle (Lepidoderma albohirtum) whose larvae (cane grubs) were destroying sugar cane crops. The Australian Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations imported 101 cane toads into Gordonvale from Hawaii in June 1935. By March 1937 62,000 toadlets had been bred and distributed into cane fields along the Queensland coast. The toads were unsuccessful at controlling the cane beetles and began to spread, slowly at first but by 1959 they had colonised most of Queensland’s east coast.
Herbert Octavius (Bert) and Robert (Bob) Hallam, who had been involved with the Embury expeditions as boat skippers purchased theHayman Island lease and moved to the island, establishing The Great Barrier Reef Game Fish Angling Club.
Camps for Aboriginal people were established on the outskirts of Normanton, and the first Aboriginal reserve gazetted. These existed in Normanton at least until 1976.

Paronella Park pleasure garden opened by Catalonia immigrant José Paronella, 12 km south-west of Innisfail. Despite flood, cyclone and fires, many of its structures have been preserved and it remains open to the public.
