Coal mining town of Glenden established.

Cairns Christian College opens in Brinsmead.

A railway line was opened between Mount Isa Mines' open-cut coal mine at Scottville and a more southerly mine at Newlands to the export port at Abbot Point, north of Bowen.

Catholic Emmanuel primary school opens on the border between Glenella and Mt Pleasant.

Doomadgee mission settlement became a Deed of Grant in Trust area, and the Doomadgee Aboriginal Community Council was established and operated until June 2004.

School in Duchess closed.

1 British resort worker Celia Douty was murdered at Dinghy Bay on Brampton Island. The crime remained unsolved until 2001, when it became the first murder in Australia to be solved using DNA profiling.
