26 The train from Cairns to Kuranda was derailed by a landslide injuring 5 of the 250 passengers on board. The service was closed until 7 May 2010 while a geotechnical review of the track and risk assessments were completed.

Brampton Enterprises announced a major redevelopment of the resort which would involve closing the resort from 24 January 2011, until an expected reopening in December 2011.

Hamilton Island was the first stop for Oprah Winfrey on her Ultimate Australian Adventure, with a trip to the Great Barrier Reef and had a barbecue on Whitehaven Beach hosted by celebrity chef Curtis Stone with entertainment by The Ten Tenors.
