The Author's approach

So, in the lead-up to William Dampier's voyage aboard the Roebuck, the reader will encounter references to Lord Charles Montagu and the Earl of Orford, with identifications of the two in the text as, respectively, Chancellor of the Exchequer and President of the Royal Society, and First Lord of the Admiralty.

The reader may well be satisfied with that.

But if he or she consults the footnote at the bottom of the page, Montagu emerges as a Machiavellian figure who established the Bank of England. Orford, an experienced naval commander with combat experience, was one of one of the seven English noblemen who issued the Invitation to William of Orange to depose James II.

At that point, one could, of course, go to the favoured browser and employ the preferred search engine.

Alternatively, since my research into these two figures went beyond the obvious Wikipedia entries, the two footnotes conclude with See here for a more detailed biography (Orford) and See here for a slightly more detailed biographical sketch (Montagu.)

In both cases, a hyperlink will take the reader to the relevant section of The Little House of Concrete website that will open in a new browser window. That way, the reader does not lose his or her place in their eBook reader.

A work (continually) in progress
