Ida Bay

Riverbank.jpg

On the way you pass through the original town of Ida Bay, though there’s nothing left of it, and on to the wharf and associated grave yard that is all that remains of the limestone exporting concern, and on to the shores of the Lune River estuary with pretty views across the waterway. Deep Hole is a destination that has its own quiet charm, and definitely attracts a big tick from train freak Hughesy, though mileages may well vary.

Deep Hole.jpgThe railway was apparently operating until as recently as 1975, and the Tasmanian government apparently acquired it in 1977, leasing it out to private operators who failed to transform it into a going concern until the current management acquired it in 2004. They seem to be doing OK with it, but every little bit helps I guess.

I’m not sure we’d be looking to do it again, but it’s definitely worth doing once.
