Musical Chairs opens with Tequila, one-time Texas Jewboys guitarist arriving on Kinky's doorstep seeking refuge and unspecified detective assistance after a gap of thirteen years. The predictable unexpected development arrives fairly quickly when the Kinkster returns from a grocery run (tuna for the cat, coffee, Vietnamese salami and toilet paper) to find a corpse in the rain room and his phone book and puppet head missing.
The plot thickens, as they invariably do, as various other original Texas Jewboys kick the bucket in suspicious circumstances and Kinky comes to the aid of Kelli the Dancer, refugee from the arms of Winnie Katz who's also apparently being stalked by a jealous ex-boyfriend. Winnie's ex-husband turns up as well, just to add a little excitement when things are looking interesting on the romantic front.
Faced with a rapid decrease in the surviving Texas Jewboys, Kinky, prompted by a suggestion from ex-Lone Star manager Cleve, who's now an inmate at a mental hospital, decides that a reunion tour is called for. In theory that's meant to be a means of keeping an eye on the survivors but turns into an opportunity for the unknown assailant to take out a couple more, and nearly accounts for temporary-Watson Mike McGovern in the process.
In the end, thanks to clues scattered throughout the action, the mystery is predictably solved and Kinky, one suspects, gets to indulge in a little horizontal mambo with Kelli the Dancer.
At least that's how I interpreted "we danced together for the very first time."
