Ralph Asher Alpher (1921 – 2007)

American physicist and cosmologist Ralph Asher Alpher (1921 – 2007) spent World War Two working on top-secret ordnance research while studying physics at George Washington University at night. He went on to work in the Applied Physics Laboratory at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University, where he worked on a Ph.D, supervised by George Gamow. In 1955 he moved on to work at the General Electric Company's Research and Development Centre.
