I’ve been playing around with bits of writing over about fifteen years without a way, apart from the old blog site, of publishing what I’d finished, not that I was getting much finished.
After changing my email address a couple of times a permanent address had definite appeal.
I had a pile of photos from the movie set that I wanted to do something with, and the old blog site couldn’t handle that much data and I needed to add further backup strategies to the ones I already use.
I wanted to get into a rhythm of writing something every day since we’re told to keep the brain active to help stave off Old-Timer’s Disease.
Thinking it over, I realised that there are a number of “free” online services that might provide solutions to these things, but they all seem to feature advertising.
I don’t like advertising.
So I signed up for the sixty-day .Mac trial and played around with the basic software. Creating a basic site seemed painless, so I invested in a copy of iLife 08, mainly to get my hands on iWeb, and a fortnight’s playing around with it convinced me, so I made the plunge, shelled out the shekels, bit the bullet and launched myself into cyberspace. The old .Mac got morphed into MobileMe, and everything was fine. Then, with the approach of the iCloud we had to start looking for another home.
As explained elsewhere, the original theme was based on the metaphor that a visit to the website was like dropping by the physical Little House of Concrete for a social visit, and it was easy enough to sort the content into appropriate sections of the house. As things grew, the old metaphor for the site didn’t quite apply the way it did at first. But here’s the latest version of where we started from. Content relating to music, reading and wine has been spun off to separate sites, and here’s what’s left from the original concept, which is here because it really doesn’t fit anywhere else at the moment.
