Jamaican-born Washington moved to London with his family to London in the early 1960s and started in the music industry as a session musician and tour manager. He established a connection with Bob Marley when he contributed backing vocals on Catch a Fire album, and continued in the same role until the late 1970s. He also wrote songs with Marley and reputedly helped Marley tailor his lyrics for a wider audience. After working as a solo artist through the mid-1970s and early 1980s he went on to found the Federation of Reggae Music, which worked to install a blue plaque on the housewhere the Wailers lived in the early 1970s.
