Back in 1973, Dee Dee had auditioned for Television as bassist, and had shown an ignorance of the basics that made even [Richard] Hell appear proficient. In the Ramones, hewas no longer alone. As he once recalled, ‘We started trying to figure out songs from records — and we couldn’t.’ The radical simplicity of the Ramones stemmed from an underlying ineptitude.
Tommy Ramone: Right from the start there were no solos and it had a unique sound, basically because the roots of it weren’t from the current music scene. . . It was absurd. It was [also] original. Especially in those days. It was so raw. (Clinton Heylin, Babylon's Burning: From Punk to Grunge, p. 21)
