George Washington Phillips (1880–1954) recorded eighteen sides for Columbis Records between 1927 and 1929 which comprised the sources for significant slices of Ry Cooder's early repertoire (notably, The Tatler). On that basis you'd rate him between Interesting (home-made 'novelty' accompaniment) and Significant. Hughesy is inclined towards the latter, based on the Cooder connection and the critique of sectarianism in organized religion and hypocritical preachers in Denomination Blues. File under: Sanctified Snuff-Dippers.
