Phil May: "Big R&B record collections were very rare at the turn of the 60s... The few of us who were interested in it just had a few albums and tapes which would circulate. You couldn't hear the music you want to-unless you played it yourself... Which is how the Stones and the Pretty things first started."
The Pretty Things "arrived on the London scene playing raw, driving Berry/Diddley/Reed influenced R&B. After only a handful of art school gigs, they played London Central School of Art Christmas dance (Dec. 63) where they were spotted by and signed to Fontana Records. Within weeks they'd been on Ready Steady Go and were the subject of a lavish spread in the Sunday Times: Magazine. (Pete Frame, Rock Family Trees, 4) Significant. File under: Pioneers and Progenitors
