Ory supposedly jammed with Buddy Bolden's band, then went on to become the premier "tailgate" trombonist of his generation - that player who because of the instrumetation of the brass bands, provided rhythmic bass parts until solo time, then took off in fluid but frequently exaggerated and amusing runs. Before World War I, Ory came to New Orleans with a band that would count Louis Armstrong, Mutt Carey, and King Oliver as members. (Rick Koster, Louisiiana Music p. 23)
