He was born in New Orleans in 1934, learned piano, ran nightclubs, taught school, played with Al Hirt, and was the house bandleader at the New Orleans Playboy Club. He was also seminal in the doomed but ambitious AFO label, worled in Los Angeles with Ornette Coleman, and was ultimately named to head the music program at NOCCA, (Rick Koster, Louisiana Music p. 44)
