As The Meters are to the world, so is Earl King to New Orleans, which is one way of saying that he has been a substantive force in the evolution of funk, A spectacular guitarist and songwriter, he was born Earl Johnson in the city in 1934. He was influenced by Isidore 'Tuts' Washington and Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown (among others) as a kid, but when the man who would be King met Guitar Slim, he found a guiding force and a close friend.
