When he wrote "Land of 1000 Dances" in 1963, New Orleans' Chris Kenner (1929-76) had no idea that he should probably have called it "Land of 1000 Royalty Checks." Structurally inspired by an old hymn, it charted in 1965 with Cannibal & The Headhunters and again with Wilson Pickett a year later. The tune was also covered by a variety of folks, including Kenner himself, with substantial success, ... Kenner had scored his first major success as a singer a few years earlier with a Grammy-nominated tune he and Bartholomew wrote together called "I Like It Like That" (later covered by ... the Dave Clark Five). Kenner went through some label difficulties and developed an affection for liquor, but he managed to stay reasonably productive. (Rick Koster, Louisiana Music p. 117)
