The Fugs, a burlesque rock-folk group ..., are indefinable in their quality. The conscious irony of their twanging and swinging hillbilly sound is an American parallel to'the music hall element in the Alberts’ makeup. They share, as well with the Alberts, an anarchic messiness of presentation, irritating to squares who frequently miss the joke. The lyrics, however, are the important thing, for their sexual audacity and Sanders' wild execution of them in public performance. Jeff Nuttall, Bomb Culture p. 168.
