Biographical Sketch
The origins of Jacksonville, Florida Southern rock jam band JJ Grey & Mofro( formerly, just Mofro) lie in a duo, Mofro Magic, formed by multi-instrumentalist John “JJ” Grey (vocals, electric piano, acoustic and electric guitar, harmonica) and guitarist Daryl Hance who met while working for an air conditioning company in their home town.
The duo played shows in Europe under that moniker, but when a prospective record deal with a London label fell through, they found themselves back in Florida in 2001, and an enhanced lineup (Mofro) signed with Fog City Records. The expanded name came with a label switch to Alligator Records for their third album (Country Ghetto) in 2007.
Co-founder Daryl Hance left the band in 2010 to pursue a solo career just before the outfit recorded their fifth album, Georgia Warhorse which attracted my attention due to guest appearances by Toots Hibbert and Derek Trucks, Hance was replaced on the guitar by Andrew Trube in one of a number of reshuffles and the Derek Trucks Band hiatus saw bassist Todd Smallie recruited. Anthony Farrell (Hammond organ), Anthony Cole (drums) and the "Hercules Horns" Dennis Marion (trumpet) and Art Edmaiston (tenor saxophone) round out the current configuration.
