Marcia Ball

Marcia BallA bipartite musician who lives in Austin and has claimed New Orleans as home, Ball grew up learning piano in a family atmosphere with a grandmother who could play her ass off. A literature major at Louisiana State University, Ball became seduced by nightclub and honky-tonk music, started singing with a roommate, and began to channel her piano skills into country and blues gigs. Before long, Ball, whose wonderful voice and spogelike ability to distill the influences of 6/8 Gulf Coastisms and Professor Longhair, coalesced her favourite sounds into a distinctive style.
