The original concept behind the Buena Vista Social Club was to explore the connections between Cuban music and its African roots, but that failed to materialise after the Malian musicians' visas were delayed in the post.
The 1997 Havana sessions that produced the best-selling Cooder collaboration were followed, a mere thirteen years later, by sessions at Sonoland Studios in Madrid that gave us Afrocubism, a window into what might have been. By that stage, of course, Buena Vista was an ongoing and highly lucrative brand in itself... Interesting. File Under: Exploring your roots.
